Tenerife Weather

The island of Tenerife is the largest in the Canary Islands and is also the island with the most people in Spain. Tenerife is also one of the most visited travel destinations in the country hosting over 5 million tourists every year. The climate on the island is affected by its relative closeness to the Sahara Desert do not expect the country to give you hot conditions for long. If you want to know how great the weather in Tenerife can be all you have to do is look at its nickname: The Island of Eternal Spring. The temperatures range from 20 to 22 Celsius (68 to 71.6 Fahrenheit) in the winter while in the summer the average temperatures go from 26 to 28 Celsius (78.8 to 82.4 Fahrenheit).

Peak Season

Because of the great weather year round, Tenerife is great to visit at any time of the year but the peak season is definitely the winter. If you visit from December through February you will find a lot of the tourists are coming from northern Europe and some from North America. During this time of the year the average high temperature does not drop under 20.6 Celsius (69.1 Fahrenheit) while at night it can be a bit chilly with temperatures which average 15.1 Celsius (59.2 Fahrenheit) in the month of January. The good news is that though the winter gets more rain on average than the summer, it is still not much. Tenerife weather in December sees only 44 millimeters (1.73 inches) of rainfall.

General Weather Information

The island of Tenerife experiences sub-tropical semi-arid climate. The summers are warm and the winters are mild to say the least. It is very sunny in Tenerife, especially during the summer when the month of July sees an average of 330 mean sunshine hours each year. Through the year, Tenerife sees a total of 2,851 mean sunshine hours. More information on past and current conditions can be found at Tenerife Weather.Net. Another thing that you will want to know about Tenerife weather is that if you visit anywhere from May through September you will more than likely not see much rain. The rainiest month during that period is September which sees 6 millimeters (0.24 inches) of rain.

What To Bring

Any time that you are visiting any of the Canary Islands you will probably be spending some time near the ocean. Because of its relatively high temperatures year round you will definitely need light clothing. It is recommended that if you visit in the cooler months that you bring at least a sweater. You may not even need it but it is good to have just in case. Bringing an umbrella in the summer is a waste of space so you should not even bother unless you are using it to protect yourself from the sun. We at www.tenerifeweather.net do not even recommend bringing an umbrella in December which is the rainiest month as Tenerife weather only sees 44 millimeters (1.73 inches) of rain during that month.

The Mountains

If you wanted to get away from the warm beach weather (we at Tenerife Weather.Net do not understand why you would) you could escape to the hills. Keep in mind that Tenerife is a volcanic island so there are high peaks where the temperature can go much lower. In fact the highest peaks will see some snow at their top. The highest peak in Tenerife is Mount Teide which has an elevation of 3,718 meters (12,198 feet). This is in fact the highest point in the country of Spain; from base to top it is the third largest volcano in the world. Needless to say, the higher you go to the mountains, the cooler the temperatures will be.

Best Time To Visit

As stated earlier, most of the tourists will visit Tenerife during the winter in the northern hemisphere but is that truly the best time to pack your bags and come to the island of the eternal spring? We at www.tenerifeweather.net believe that you could choose another time of the year as the best time to visit. That would be anytime from May through September. During the month of May you will not see the high numbers of tourists in Tenerife and the good thing is that you have less of a chance of rain ruining your vacation. The average amount of rain in the month of July is 0. You may get a quick passing shower but nothing large enough to measure.
